Rain Continues to Wreak Havoc in Southern California

A strong squall line moving in producing light...

Distant heavy rain (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Heavy rains continued to drench Southland roads creating a slick and slippery challenge for drivers commuting through its throughways on Tuesday. While many were grateful that the rains helped put out the fires on the mountains, others who found themselves caught in collisions throughout various freeways were not as thrilled.

Amongst the handful of accidents on the 5 Freeway and 134 Freeway interchange an oil tanker found itself jackknifed across the highway while other cars spun out throughout the freeways. There have been no serious injuries reported from these incidents.

On the wet roads of Cahuenga Pass a six-car pileup was reported.  Amid the mix of vehicles caught in the wreck were a concoction of cars, SUV’s, and a pickup. They slammed into one another on the 101 Freeway near Barham Boulevard in Studio City. So far there have been no reports of injuries during the multi-vehicle pileup.

It is the second morning in a row that Southland motorists have to head into work dealing with rainy conditions. It has been a headache for many motorists, as it seems they cannot escape the wet conditions. An early downpour soaked most of the Southland and the areas from Duarte to Long Beach, Northridge and Westwood were drenched.

Some of the equipment used to aid drivers during rainy conditions on public streets did not work too well. Vehicles were forced to drive through flooded Studio City streets where storm drains were losing the battle against the heavy downpour.

Adding to the hazards of driving during a down pour, a rockslide in the Mulholland Drive gave drivers two choices. They were forced to quickly become deft to the road conditions or crash.

During the rainy conditions, temperatures reached the mid-60s in: the Los Angeles-Metro area, Orange County, the Inland Empire, Valleys and high desert. Mountain regions experienced highs in the upper 40s. It is expected that the rain will continue its downpour through the rest of Tuesday morning.

Drivers who chose to operate their vehicles during the rainy conditions are asked to be aware of the slick roads and exercise cautious driving techniques.  Slowing down and allowing for a bigger gap in between vehicles reduces the chance of hydroplaning and rear-end collisions. It is encouraged drivers adapt these rules on highways and streets, they can help prevent accidents.

Overnight Rains Create Dangerous Driving Conditions

A night of rain throughout Southern California brought both much needed relief for LA County firefighters and dangerous conditions for drivers, leading to a number of highway accidents.

For many, the rains were a welcome sight, as Los Angeles has just experienced its fourth driest winter on record, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is expected to persist throughout the day, with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Scattered showers are also anticipated through Tuesday. For firefighters battling multiple fires throughout Los Angeles, the rains created a welcome break from the heat and the dry, allowing them the upper hand.

Commuters through Los Angeles were less pleased with the rainfall, as slippery conditions led to multiple accidents snarling traffic throughout the morning. In downtown Los Angeles, two cars collided on the 101 Freeway near Broadway, leading to significant backups, while another driver skidded onto an embankment on the Carson Street on-ramp to the 105 Freeway in Hawthorne.

As the number of accidents continues to rise, city officials are reminding drivers to allow for extra time in their morning commutes, and to keep extra distance between themselves and the cars in front of them.

In rainy conditions, it is essential to adjust your driving habits to avoid the potential for an accident. Your overall speeds must be reduced, as decreasing traction makes it much more difficult to stop, turn or accelerate to avoid a collision. Steer clear of standing water as your vehicle could lose control, spinning out into oncoming lanes or other vehicles on the road beside you. When slowing, do so much earlier and more gradually, both to ensure that your vehicle comes to a safe stop and to alert drivers behind you, given them ample time to stop as well.

If you or someone you know has been hurt in a crash in rainy conditions as a result of another driver who failed to adjust their behavior, you should seek help. Depending on the circumstances that led to your accident, you may be entitled to compensation to help pay for things like car repair payments and medical bills, as well as replace wages from time spent away from work. With the help of an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer, you can be assured of recovering the full amount that you are rightfully owed.

County desert cities, Hemet, Perris and Beaumont. However, expect local law enforcement in most cities to increase the number of police officers and DUI checkpoints to reduce the amount of drunken drivers.

A specific patrol force will be assigned to be on the lookout for drivers under the influence. From 2007 to 2011 at least 38 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities that occurred each year around May 5 involved impaired drivers or motorcycle operators, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Drinking and driving is a serious issue. It accounts for a laundry list of accidents, injuries, damages and deaths. If you consume an alcoholic beverage, have a plan to get home after the party. Designate a driver or hire a cab to get you to a safe resting place like your hotel room or home after drinking.

Drivers who violate drinking and driving laws can face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license and can accumulate up to $10,000 in fees and fines, plus more expensive insurance rates. Having to encounter these unexpected expenses can put a damper in your bank account and personal life. It only gets worse if you get into an accident and injure yourself and others.

Safety experts constantly advocate that people don’t drink and drive. They advocate this because it can lead to car accidents and property damage.  At the end of the day, all costs associated with the decision to drink and drive are not worth the risk. Drinking and driving can tear families apart and cause dire financial hardships in others.

Having a drinking and driving violation in your personal driving record might cause you to lose your job or throw you out of the race for a potential one. It is not worth putting your career at risk for a night of drinking and driving. If you do decide to drink give a friend a call or hire a cab to drive you home.

If you were injured in a car accident, contact AA Accident Attorneys, you may be entitled to compensation that can cover medical costs, loss of income and a change in lifestyle. A Riverside car accident lawyer can listen to your case for free.

Afghanistan Veteran Killed in Motorcycle Crash

A US Marine who had served two tours of duty in Afghanistan was killed in a collision with an automobile Saturday in Chatsworth.

According to local police reports and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, 27 year old Jesse Wilkes was killed when a car cut in front of his motorcycle as he passed through an intersection close to his home, knocking him to the ground at speed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics.

“Jesse was heading eastbound on Devonshire and he was going the speed limit, and a woman decided to a make a left and turn in front of him. He misjudged how much time she had. He skidded and hit her,” said Jesse’s mother, Kimber Wilkes, who added that the accident did not yet seem real. His step-father Bill Lassetter also added that he would miss everything about the man he considered to be his son. Jesse had been a Marine reservist twice sent to Afghanistan on active duty.

Following the accident, a candlelight vigil was held by friends and family at the scene of the accident to honor the memory of the fallen Marine. “I can’t thank all these people who have put this together for us. I can’t that them enough, they’re angels,” said Kimber. “I can’t really put into words what he’s done for me… What he’s done for everyone,” said Cheyenne Thompson, who served with Jesse and was a member of the same motorcycle riding club. “I can’t define it.”

To prevent accidents like this from occurring again, the Wilkes family is now asking the city of Chatsworth to install a left-hand turn signal to the intersection. “It didn’t need to happen,” says Jesse’s mother. And I don’t want to see it happen to anyone else. That’s why we’re working so hard to make some changes.”

If you or someone you know has been hurt in a motorcycle accident such as this, you should seek help. Depending on the circumstances that led to your injuries, you may be entitled to compensation to help you cover the costs of your recovery. Illegal L.A. Street Racing Kills another Innocent Man

Illegal racing in the streets of the city of Los Angeles has claimed the life of another innocent bystander this week. Authorities reported that at least eight other vehicles were damaged in the crash and the driver of the vehicle that allegedly killed the innocent man fled the scene. It is the second illegal street racing crash of the week that takes the life of an innocent person in L.A.

Reports state that on the 200 block of W. Manchester Avenue near Broadway in Southern Los Angeles the deadly racing crash accident happened Tuesday night.

Edward Angel Ramirez, a 35-year-old, was behind the wheel of a Saturn when it was struck by a Pontiac. The collision caused the car to catch on fire. Authorities say that in no way was Ramirez participating in an illegal race between a Pontiac and a Dodge Charger.

Witnesses told investigators that when the two vehicles were racing, the Charger was traveling against traffic on Broadway.

It was during the race that the Pontiac crashed. Its driver survived the crash, exited the vehicle and fled the scene before police arrived on the scene.

In a nearly synchronized motion, the Charger slammed into a pickup truck after the Pontiac and Saturn crashed.

Emergency respondents transported the driver of the truck and the Charger to a nearby hospital where they were to be treated. Authorities stated that they will be interrogating the driver of the Charger who will also be checked for see if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A total of eight cars and one bicyclist were involved in the two collisions. A third victim was injured and transported to the hospital as well. The extent of that person’s injuries was not released.

Investigators continue to search for the driver that fled the scene as well as two passengers who were reportedly seen fleeing from the Charger. Authorities are encouraging any person that witnessed the accident to step forward with the information and contact them.

Last week a 4-year-old girl, an innocent bystander, was killed as a result of a street race involving two vehicles. Similarly, one of the people operating a racing vehicle remained on the scene and the other fled. Authorities from that city stated that the person from the fleeing vehicle engaged in racing can be found equally as culpable as the one that crashed.

If you have lost a loved one in a collision you have the option to contact a Los Angeles car accident lawyer.  After an over-the-phone consultation you may be eligible to have an AA Accident Attorneys lawyer represent your case that can cover your hospital costs and get you the compensation you deserve.

Alleged LA Street Race Crash Killed Man

Authorities are searching for a second driver that was possibly involved in a South Los Angeles street race that killed a man on Sunday.

At around 9 p.m. a 55-year-old man was struck by a Honda near Compton Avenue and 56th Street. Detectives are unsure if the person struck was crossing the street at the time of the accident. However, they were able to verify that the man was on the roadway when he was hit.

Detectives said that the driver of the Honda was heading southbound on Compton Avenue at speeds of upwards 70 miles per hour and for an unknown reason lost control of the car then struck the pedestrian.

Skid marks were left on the scene as evidence that the driver made and effort to stop the vehicle from hitting the 50-year-old. Along the rubber tire marks were several other crashed vehicles and a toppled streetlight that showed where the car came to a stop.

On the road lay the lifeless body of a man surrounded by automobile debris and parts of a destroyed light pole.

Emergency respondents rushed on the scene to help the victim of the car accident and the driver of the Honda.

Per reports, Compton Avenue is infamous for street racing. Detectives investigating the site stated where they believe the driver might have been participating in a street race with one other vehicle. Further information about the man that lost control of his vehicle has not been available. Information such as the drivers mental state, his condition post the accident, or if there were any passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

If anyone witnessed the scene, detectives are asking them to step forward and aid them with the investigation. So far, authorities do not have a description of the second vehicle, its driver or passengers.

In certain other Southern California cities street racing is also a problem. Last week a 4-year-old girl, aninnocent bystander, was killed as a result of a street race involving two vehicles. Similarly, one of the vehicles remained on the scene but the other fled. Authorities there stated that the person from the fleeing vehicle engaged in racing can be found equally as culpable as the one that crashed.

Former OC Government CEO Involved In Fatal Diamond Bar Crash

Authorities identified the driver of an alleged accident that killed two people in an Orange County freeway as the former CEO of Orange County. The highway wreck is currently being investigated and no arrests have been made.

Thomas G. Mauk, was allegedly driving a Cadillac Escalade on the 57 Freeway in Diamond Bar on the day that it smashed against a stalled Toyota Prius that managed to kill two people and one of two canines that were riding with along.

Reportedly, the accident happed at around 9:09 p.m. Sunday, per the California Highway Patrol. Mauk and his wife were riding in the Escalade and were moving at a speed of around 60 miles per hour when they slammed into the parked Prius north of Pathfinder Road.

Anubhai U. Patel of Anaheim, a 67-year-old, and his wife, 68-year-old Shardaben Patel were the people killed in the crash. Only one of their two dogs in the vehicle survived the high-speed highway collision.

Mauk and his wife suffered minor injuries, however.

CHP is investigating the accident and has not made any arrests as of yet. Explanations or further details regarding the accident have not been released to the public.

It was last July when Mauk agreed to abdicate his post. He came to this decision after allegedly much pressure to quit after sex charges were filed against then Santa Ana City Councilman Carlos Bustamante, while he headed the county Department of Public Works. Originally, Bustamante had been arrested by District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and charged him with allegedly committing twelve sex crimes while holding his county job from 2003 to 2011.

Highway driving can be dangerous, especially if the person behind the wheel is distracted. If you find that while you are behind the wheel you are too tempted to pick up a handheld device and make a call, don’t. Instead, pull over to a safe spot, away from danger (preferably a parking spot) and make a phone call then, or you could also wait until you arrive to your destination.

Pulling over on a freeway presents a high risk of serious injuries to you, your passengers and other motorists. If you can, try to exit the freeway and pull over at a safe spot that will not be an obstruction to traffic.

If you or someone you know were involved in an accident and were injured as a result, then you need to contact an Orange County car accident lawyer who will listen to your case for free! You may qualify for compensation too. So, don’t hesitate, call today!

Riverside Hit and Run Racing Accident Seriously Injures Young Girl

A 4-year-old girl was rushed the hospital after being injured in a Riverside hit-and-run racing accident Monday afternoon. Authorities are searching for those responsible for injuring the young girl.

As of Tuesday the young girl, Carlie Rodriguez, remained in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center with major head trauma. Her family remained by her side, alert to the situation and hoping that it gets better.

“She’s got a drain in her brain right now. Some other lines that are monitoring her blood pressure and things like that,” Christina Perez, Rodriguez’s aunt, told reporters.

On Monday momements before 2 p.m. on the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Nelson Street in Riverside, Carlie was sitting in a booster seat of a Chevy Malibu that was coming off of a stop sign, like it usually did. She enjoying the drive but would not have anticipated what happened next.

Out of nowhere, according to witnesses, a 2008 Ford Mustang that was racing an older orange sports car slammed into the Chevy and seriously injured Carlie, all within seconds. Witnesses then took note of the scene and contacted authorities.

Det. Rick Prince said in a statement that the driver of the Mustang, a vehicle that was reported stolen, then stopped “and checked on the occupants of the Malibu and then fled on foot, leaving the Mustang behind.”

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they rushed the injured girl to the hospital, where she remained for medical attention.

Her father, the driver, was not injured, Riverside police told reporters.

Authorities said the driver of the sports car failed to stop and fled the scene. When he is found, he can face serious consequences for leaving the scene of the Riverside racing car accident.

“Anytime a street race is involved both vehicles including the non-contact vehicle will be held responsible for whatever took place here,” Sgt. Skip Stowalter reminded reporters.

Currently, authorities are working on the case, studying evidence and interviewing witnesses. They have not released other details regarding the wreck that injured the 4-year-old girl.

Fiery Los Angeles Car Collision Kills 3 People

Authorities say at least three people were killed in a car collision that erupted in fire in South Los Angeles, Tuesday evening.

A few moments before 10:30 p.m., someone alerted authorities regarding a vehicle on the 800 block of West Manchester Boulevard. A witness at the scene said two vehicles had crashed and one of them caught on fire shortly after.

Los Angeles Fire Department stated that three of the victims in one car died at the scene after being the only car that crashed against a light pole. Those victims were trapped in the vehicle and were “beyond help,” per Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Sgt. Vargas with the Los Angeles Police Department’s South LA Traffic Division told reporters that the condition of a fourth man was unknown. But that victim was rushed to the hospital and treated for personal injuries. He was ejected from the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Originally Sgt. Vargas had announced that only two people died at the fiery scene.

Video footage of the scene was published online. It displayed flames that rose above the wrecked vehicle, lighting up the surroundings while a firefighter worked to stop the blaze from spreading. There were a set of skid marks that managed to get on a sidewalk, an a toppled light pole.

Further information about the victims involved in the collision has not been made available to the public.

Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.

Officials told news reporters that an initial investigation showed that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Witnesses reported there may have been another vehicle involved that fled the scene right after the collision.

Following local automobile laws is important to reduce the chances of getting into an automobile accident. Make sure to pay attention to various speed limits set on roads that you are asked to follow. They are set to ensure the safety of those traversing through those thorough ways. Sometimes however, you are asked to follow the flow of the traffic. If traffic is at a standstill on a highway or a road, it becomes a safety hazard to travel at high rates of speed.

If you or a loved one were involved in a serious car accident, you may be entitled to compensation. For more information contact AA Accident Attorneys. A Los Angeles car accident lawyer can listen to your case free of charge!

Out of Control Truck Crashes into Home, Two Injured

Two men suffered serious injuries after their truck lost control and crashed into a Ramona home Friday afternoon in San Diego.

According to officials from Cal Fire, the crash took place just after 4 p.m. in the 22900 block of San Vincente Road, where a truck piloted by a man in his 20s lost control and crashed through trees and vegetation before colliding with the side of a house.

Both the driver of the truck and a front seat passenger in his 40s suffered serious injuries in the crash, needing to be pulled from the wreckage by responding firefighters. Once extricated, they were airlifted to Palomar Medical Center, where they are listed in critical condition. Upon being admitted, the driver was arrested by local police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time of the accident, though significant damages were inflicted. Building inspectors will be called to the home to assess the damages and determine if the house is still safe for use or if major structural repairs are needed.

Police investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash, though the driver’s DUI arrest seems to explain his vehicle’s loss of control. There have been no reports of other vehicles involved.

Given the circumstances, it is fortunate that more people were not hurt in the ordeal, as an out of control truck crashing into a house has the potential to inflict serious harm to many people. Driving under the influence of alcohol is never worth the risk, and can turn any trip into a potentially fatal accident.

If you or someone you know has been hurt in a crash involving a driver under the influence, you should seek help. With the assistance of a skilled San Diego car accident lawyer, compensation can be earned to help pay for things like medical bills and car repair payments, as well as replace wages from time spent away from work.
